Choosing a 35mm film camera is as much about how it feels in your hands as it is about the photographs it creates. A compact point-and-shoot is ideal if you want something light, quick and easy to carry every day, while a manual SLR gives you more control over focus, shutter speed and aperture for a slower, more considered way of shooting. Whether you are buying your first film camera or adding another old camera to your collection, 35mm remains one of the most practical formats thanks to widely available film stocks, straightforward processing and a huge range of lenses and camera styles to explore.

A vintage film camera also brings character that modern digital cameras often try to imitate, from the sound of the shutter to the look of real grain, natural colour and occasional imperfections that make each frame feel personal. Our selection of vintage cameras includes classic 35mm camera options for travel, portraits, street photography and everyday snapshots, with models suited to beginners as well as experienced film shooters. If you are drawn to the charm of a retro film camera or want an old film camera that is ready for regular use, this collection is a great place to find a reliable piece of photographic history and start creating images with a more tactile, thoughtful process.

35mm Camera FAQs

A 35mm film camera uses widely available cartridge film and usually gives 24 or 36 shots per roll. It is the easiest vintage format to buy for, load, develop and scan, which makes it a practical starting point for beginners as well as a flexible everyday choice for experienced film photographers.

For most beginners, the safest choices are a tested point-and-shoot, an aperture-priority SLR or a simple manual SLR with a working light meter. Choose automatic if you mainly want snapshots, or choose an SLR if you want to learn focus, lenses and exposure step by step.

Yes. 35mm film is still widely available in colour, black and white and specialist stocks, and many high-street, local and mail-in labs can develop and scan it. Before buying a camera, it is worth checking that you also have access to fresh film and a reliable lab.

Open the camera back, place the cartridge in the film chamber, pull the film leader across to the take-up spool and advance until the film catches securely. Close the back, wind on to the first frame and check that the rewind crank turns, which usually shows the film is moving correctly.

A roll can stay in a camera for weeks or months if the camera is kept cool, dry and away from direct heat. For important photos, it is better to finish the roll and develop it sooner, because heat, airport scanners, moisture and age can all affect undeveloped film.
