Mamiya film cameras have a well-earned reputation for solid engineering, straightforward handling and superb image quality, making them a rewarding choice for collectors and photographers who still enjoy shooting analogue. From compact Mamiya 35mm film cameras to larger professional systems, each model offers a different way to experience film photography, whether you are looking for a dependable everyday shooter or a more distinctive vintage Mamiya camera to add to your collection. When choosing an old Mamiya camera, it is worth considering how you plan to use it: a smaller 35mm body may suit travel and casual photography, while Mamiya’s larger format cameras are often favoured for portraits, studio work and carefully composed images.

Vintage Mamiya cameras are also popular because they combine practical usability with genuine collectable appeal. Many models were built to a high standard, with bright viewfinders, reliable shutters and excellent lens options, but condition is still important when buying any classic camera. Look out for details such as smooth film advance, accurate shutter speeds, clean optics, responsive light meters where fitted, and good seals around the film door. Whether you are buying your first Mamiya or replacing a much-loved camera from the past, browsing a curated selection helps you compare styles, formats and features so you can find a camera that feels right in the hand and inspires you to keep shooting film.

Mamiya Film Camera FAQs

Choose a Mamiya 645 if you want a more portable medium format system, an RB67 or RZ67 if you want a studio-focused modular camera, or a C-series TLR if you like waist-level 6x6 shooting. Mamiya is best chosen by workflow, not just brand name.

Mamiya 645 is smaller, lighter and gives more frames per roll, making it easier for handheld use. The RB67 gives a larger negative and a more deliberate studio-style experience, but it is heavier and slower. The better choice depends on how and where you shoot.

Mamiya medium format cameras are excellent for portraits because the larger negatives, strong lenses and waist-level viewing options can create a distinctive look. RB, RZ and 645 systems are especially popular for portrait work, but condition, lens choice and handling matter more than the name alone.

Many modular Mamiya cameras use film backs, holders or inserts, and missing parts can make a camera unusable. Before buying, check exactly what is included: body, lens, finder, back, insert and dark slide where relevant. Complete kits are usually easier for first-time medium format buyers.

Some Mamiya cameras, especially RB and RZ systems, are heavy for travel and better suited to slower work. Mamiya 645 bodies or folding medium format alternatives are easier to carry. If travel is the priority, check the full kit weight, not just the camera body.
